LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government orders immediate emergency repairs on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road, responding to worsening failures and daily traffic gridlock along the critical corridor linking Lagos and Ogun states.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, issued the directive during an inspection on Monday, saying repairs will focus on the most distressed sections. “Out of the 22 kilometres assessed, active intervention will prioritise about 18 kilometres with severe structural failures,” Umahi says.
He attributes the road’s deterioration to unresolved concession arrangements and flawed engineering assumptions during earlier construction phases. “Some failures stem from wrong parameters and concession issues that were never resolved,” he explains.
Umahi says repairs will largely take place at night to reduce traffic disruption, with failed low-lying areas rebuilt using reinforced concrete for durability. FG Orders Emergency Repairs on Failing Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road.
He adds that the Ota-bound carriageway suffers greater damage than the Lagos-bound side.
A second phase will include full resurfacing, replacement of bridge expansion joints and installation of solar-powered streetlights, with the concessionaire responsible for long-term maintenance.
The renewed intervention follows sustained public outcry and earlier reporting by Africa Health Report highlighting the road’s impact on commuters, businesses and residents.
