KWARA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has released six Kwara State vigilante members after investigations confirm their involvement in lawful community security operations.
The vigilantes were arrested on December 31, 2025, along the Auchi–Ikpeshi Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Edo State, while travelling in an official vehicle belonging to Ifelodun Local Government, Kwara State.
Confirming their release, Kwara Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi says the group is handed over to the Kwara State Police Command by 22 Armoured Brigade Commander Brigadier General N.N. Rume for profiling.
“Following thorough investigation, it is established that the individuals are legitimate vigilantes working with recognised security agencies,” Adeyemi states.
The suspects are subsequently released to their leaders after being cleared of wrongdoing.
Police Commissioner Ojo Adekimi stresses the importance of lawful coordination between community vigilantes and security forces, urging adherence to established legal frameworks.
The incident underscores ongoing efforts to balance grassroots security initiatives with national command structures amid Nigeria’s anti-banditry campaign.
