LAGOS, Nigeria – A midday fire engulfs a scrap recycling site in Abule Egba, Lagos, damaging nearby buildings and raising safety concerns over informal industrial operations.
The blaze breaks out around 1:00 p.m. on Monday at an open scrap recycling space on Pipeline Road, off Ekoro Road, destroying metal materials worth millions of naira.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service say no lives are lost, although an adult woman suffers shock and receives immediate medical attention at the scene.
Controller-General Margaret Adeseye confirms that firefighters from Agege and Abesan stations respond swiftly after a distress call. “Preliminary findings show the fire started at an open recycling site,” she says.
The inferno spreads to a nearby residential bungalow and a small church before firefighters bring it under control. Investigations are underway to determine the cause.
Eyewitness Sodiq Lawal describes chaotic scenes as flames rise rapidly. “The heat is intense. Before help arrives, the fire spreads to a house and a mini church,” he says.
Another resident, Funke Adeyemi, recounts how a woman collapses from shock. “Emergency workers act quickly and save her,” she says.
Adeseye urges residents and operators of informal industrial sites to comply strictly with fire safety regulations to prevent similar incidents.
