UMUAHIA, Nigeria – Abia State Governor Alex Otti reaffirms his administration’s commitment to sustained development across critical sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation, power supply and security.
The governor gives the assurance during his monthly media interaction with journalists on Tuesday night at the Government House in Umuahia, as major public works projects continue across the state.
Governor Otti thanks Abia residents for their patience amid widespread road construction and rehabilitation, appealing for continued understanding as asphalt overlay and infrastructure upgrades extend to more communities.
On environmental sanitation, he stresses a zero-tolerance policy on waste, citing public health concerns and urging residents to take responsibility for their surroundings. “In the area of environmental sanitation, nobody has been allowed to drop the ball,” Otti says. “We have zero tolerance for rubbish, which is why we go around to pick it up and deal with it the best way we can.”
Turning to healthcare, the governor highlights the ongoing upgrade of more than 200 primary healthcare centres, equipped to meet national minimum standards. He says recruitment of qualified medical personnel remains a priority, commending health workers for earning national recognition in emergency preparedness and primary healthcare leadership.
In education, Otti outlines ongoing school renovations, perimeter fencing, smart classroom initiatives and enhanced security for public schools, adding that a new phase of projects will begin in 2026.
He also announces the successful rollout of a pilot electric bus programme, with 20 buses currently offering free public transport. The governor says he personally rode one from Umuahia to Ukwa West. “The whole idea is to reduce our carbon footprint and promote environmental sustainability,” he says, noting that the fleet will expand to 100 electric buses by the end of 2026.
