Professor Martins Emeje
ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigerian scholar Professor Martins Emeje emerged as Co-Chair of the World Health Organisation’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional Medicine, securing Nigeria a key role in global health policy.
Emeje, Director-General of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency, is elected during the group’s inaugural meeting in New Delhi, alongside WHO’s Global Summit on Traditional Medicine. “This is the highest form of recognition in traditional medicine globally,” Emeje says, calling the appointment both an honour and responsibility.
The 19-member advisory group guides implementation of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034, shaping standards, research and integration of traditional medicine into health systems.
Emeje says he will use the role to advance Africa’s interests. “I cannot be part of global discussions while my country remains stagnant,” he states, citing Nigeria’s growing legislative and presidential support for local research and innovation.
WHO officials describe the panel as critical to balancing cultural diversity, scientific evidence and regulation in traditional medicine worldwide.
