IBADAN, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroy counterfeit, expired and substandard products worth over ₦55 billion, intensifying its crackdown on illegal and unsafe goods.
The destruction exercise, carried out in Ibadan, targets fake, unregistered, banned, adulterated and expired products, according to a statement issued on Friday.
NAFDAC says the operation prevents the items from re-entering circulation and posing risks to public health.
The agency reveals that more than 70 compliant companies, NGOs and trade unions voluntarily submit expired and damaged products for destruction, describing the move as a sign of growing industry cooperation.
Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye says the exercise reflects NAFDAC’s zero-tolerance policy on unsafe products. “This destruction exercise is critical to preventing dangerous products from re-entering the market,” Adeyeye says.
She urges Nigerians to avoid patronising unauthorised medicine and food dealers, warning that fake and expired products threaten lives and undermine confidence in healthcare systems.
Adeyeye calls on religious leaders, community heads and health professionals to help educate the public.
NAFDAC pledges to continue strengthening surveillance, enforcement and public awareness to eliminate substandard products nationwide.
