ADO-EKITI, Nigeria – The Ekiti State Government dismisses a surgeon at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) following allegations of unauthorised kidney removal.
The decision follows the findings of a seven-member panel of enquiry, set up to investigate a complaint by patient Joshua Afolayan.
Health Commissioner Oyebanji Filani announced the action on Friday after receiving the panel’s report, chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile. “The surgeon with primary responsibility for the operation is dismissed with immediate effect,” the statement says.
All members of the surgical team present during the procedure are suspended for one month pending further review.
The government also commits to fully funding Afolayan’s kidney transplant and post-transplant care for two years.
Ekiti pledges reforms to strengthen clinical governance, patient safety and ethical standards at EKSUTH.
