ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Society of Engineers urges the Ogun State government to embrace renewable energy as a strategic tool to support businesses, cut emissions and accelerate economic growth.
The chairman of the NSE Abeokuta branch, Olumayowa Idowu, made the call on Tuesday, describing renewable energy as critical for states with expanding industries and rising energy demand.
Speaking at the commissioning of the NSE Abeokuta secretariat’s 6,000-watt solar inverter system, Idowu says Ogun is well positioned to lead solar adoption due to its industrial clusters and growing residential estates. “Renewable energy is no longer optional — it is essential,” Idowu says. “If we scale these solutions across government facilities, we reduce dependence on diesel, support businesses and cut carbon emissions.”
He explains that frequent power outages increase operating costs for households and manufacturers, while solar solutions offer long-term savings and energy security.
Idowu urges the state government to replicate renewable systems in public offices, hospitals and schools, particularly in areas prone to unstable grid supply. He adds that clean energy adoption would also improve air quality and align Ogun with global climate commitments.
The NSE commissions both the solar installation and an 18-seater Ford Transit bus during the event, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, professional development and support for public infrastructure.
The society pledges continued collaboration with the government to promote sustainable development and train young engineers in emerging technologies.
