ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) declares full operational readiness to respond swiftly to emergencies during the Yuletide season, as increased travel and public gatherings raise safety risks nationwide.
The assurance comes on Saturday in a statement posted on NEMA’s official X account, quoting Director General Zubaida Umar, who leads staff on a five-kilometre fitness exercise in Abuja.
According to NEMA, the exercise strengthens physical fitness, teamwork and preparedness among personnel ahead of heightened emergency demands. “I am satisfied with the fitness level, discipline and operational preparedness of NEMA personnel,” Umar says.
“Physical readiness is critical to effective emergency response, especially during periods of increased human and vehicular activity.”
She confirms that NEMA has activated preparedness mechanisms across the country and is coordinating closely with security agencies, emergency responders and critical stakeholders to ensure rapid response.
Umar urges Nigerians to remain safety-conscious throughout the festive period, advising motorists to avoid speeding, obey traffic regulations and exercise caution on roads, waterways and at public events. “NEMA remains committed to the protection of lives and property,” she says. “Our teams are on standby across zonal, territorial and state offices to respond promptly to emergencies.”
Also speaking, Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman, explains that the fitness exercise is a routine activity to keep personnel physically and mentally prepared for emergencies year-round.
The exercise records participation from the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC and FRSC, highlighting inter-agency collaboration as a cornerstone of effective disaster management.
NEMA reiterates its call for public vigilance as Nigerians travel and celebrate during the festive season.
