ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has suspended his scheduled diplomatic trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, following fresh security crises in Kebbi and Kwara states.
The President is awaiting detailed briefings on the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi and the armed attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the development on Wednesday afternoon, noting that Tinubu had ordered an immediate reinforcement of security personnel in Eruku and across Ekiti Local Government Area. “The President has directed security agencies to go after the perpetrators without delay,” he said.
Tinubu was expected to depart Abuja today for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg and later travel to Angola for the seventh AU–EU Summit. However, the worsening security situation prompted a last-minute suspension of the trip.
According to Onanuga, the President will now wait for updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who has been dispatched to Kebbi on a sympathy visit and to receive firsthand briefings from local authorities. Tinubu is also expecting intelligence and security assessments from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) on the Kwara attack.
The Presidency said the Commander-in-Chief has reiterated his order to security agencies to ensure the safe and urgent rescue of the abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi, describing the incident as “deeply distressing.”
Tinubu also assured the affected communities that there would be no let-up in the Federal Government’s response and vowed that those responsible for the attacks “will be pursued and brought to justice.”
The Presidency did not provide a new date for the President’s postponed trips.
