President Bola Tinubu addressing Nigerian editors at the ANEC 2025 conference in Abuja
ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian editors to uphold the ideals of democracy and national unity while pledging tax reliefs and policy support to revitalise the media industry.
Addressing the 21st Annual Nigerian Guild of Editors Conference (ANEC) 2025 at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasised that the press remains “a cornerstone of democracy.”
“The media must continue to speak truth to power, hold leaders accountable, and inspire hope,” the President said. “Your pens and platforms must advance peace, justice, and cohesion.”
In a notable policy statement, Tinubu said his administration would consider tax relief measures and financial incentives to ease the burden on struggling news organisations.
“We will look into the Guild’s request for tax relief and other interventions,” he assured, noting that “a vibrant and sustainable media is vital to our democratic journey.”
The conference, themed “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: Role of Editors,” gathered media executives, policymakers, and civil society leaders to discuss press freedom and accountability in governance.
Guild President Eze Anaba commended Tinubu’s commitment, saying it marked “a refreshing gesture that acknowledges journalism as a public good.”
Analysts believe that such reforms could help safeguard Nigeria’s media landscape, which has faced economic pressure and threats to press freedom in recent years.
