ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced that it will begin mandatory monthly psychiatric evaluations for all prison inmates nationwide starting November 2025, in a move aimed at strengthening mental healthcare and rehabilitation within correctional centres.
The initiative was disclosed by NMA Vice President, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, during a visit to the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Abuja on Wednesday, also featured the nationwide donation of reusable sanitary pads to female inmates, supported by Diatom Impact/Platform Capital, the manufacturers of the products.
“Our findings revealed that many inmates require consistent psychiatric evaluation to aid rehabilitation and reintegration,” Olowojebutu said. “This initiative ensures that every inmate has access to mental health tools and dignity.”
He added that the sanitary pad donation addresses a critical hygiene concern affecting female inmates.
“I made a personal vow to support these women, and today marks the fulfilment of that promise,” he said.
Responding, the Controller-General, NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, praised the NMA and its partners for demonstrating sustained commitment to inmate welfare.
“Our inmates are not societal outcasts. They deserve dignity, care, and opportunities for rehabilitation,” he said.
Diatom Impact Chairman, Dr. Akintoye Akindele, described the intervention as a moral responsibility, noting that many inmates are victims of circumstance and deserve humane treatment.
