ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with renewed focus on expanding cooperation in investment, technology transfer and strategic sectors of their economies.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday following a meeting between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, in Abuja.
During the meeting, both countries explored ways to deepen political, economic and diplomatic engagement.
A key outcome of the discussions was the proposal to reactivate the Nigeria-Iran Joint Commission, which has not convened for approximately four years.
The Iranian Ambassador expressed his country’s readiness to host the next session of the commission in Abuja and advocated regular political consultations between both foreign ministries to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address regional and international issues.
Economic cooperation featured prominently during the talks, with Iran expressing interest in expanding investment, technology transfer and joint ventures across sectors including energy, oil and gas, mining, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, construction and automotive technology.
According to the Iranian envoy, the discussions provided an opportunity to review existing bilateral relations and identify practical areas for deeper cooperation.
Both sides also highlighted the importance of restoring stronger diplomatic engagement through the exchange of ambassadors and sustained high-level consultations aimed at advancing shared economic and development interests.
