ABUJA, Nigeria – Taraba State has secured federal approval for a specialised university focused on climate change, agriculture, science and technology, positioning the state at the centre of Nigeria’s growing push for climate resilience and sustainable development.
The National Universities Commission on Thursday formally recognised Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture, Science and Climate Action (TSU-TASCA), marking the establishment of one of Nigeria’s few specialised institutions dedicated to climate and environmental challenges.
The approval was announced during a ceremony at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where NUC officials described the development as a significant milestone in the expansion of specialised higher education.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, professor Abdullahi Ribadu said the NUC would provide quality assurance support to ensure the institution meets national academic standards.
Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas, said the university, located in Gembu, would become a centre of excellence for tropical agriculture, scientific innovation and climate adaptation.
According to him, the institution is designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing Nigeria, including food insecurity, environmental degradation and climate change.
The governor said the university would train highly skilled professionals, promote research and generate solutions capable of strengthening agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.
The establishment of TSU-TASCA reflects growing recognition that universities must increasingly address real-world challenges, particularly those related to food systems, climate adaptation and scientific innovation.
Officials believe the institution could also stimulate economic growth in Taraba through research partnerships, human capital development and innovation-driven industries.
The approval adds to the growing number of specialised universities being established across Nigeria to tackle emerging global and national challenges.
