Governor Alex Otti
ABIA, Nigeria- Governor Alex Otti says Abia State has reduced its debt burden by more than N141 billion while completing 414 road projects covering 864 kilometres within three years.
Speaking on friday during his monthly media briefing in Umuahia, Otti says the state’s debt profile dropped from about N191 billion in 2023 to below N50 billion by the end of 2025, marking one of the sharpest debt reductions recorded by any Nigerian state in recent years.
The governor says 82 additional roads spanning 212 kilometres remain under construction, while several completed roads now feature drainage systems and streetlights to improve safety and mobility.
Data released by the administration also show Abia climbed from 17th to fourth position in national fiscal sustainability rankings between 2023 and 2025.
In healthcare, Otti says the government recruited 821 health workers and renovated 277 primary healthcare centres with support from the World Bank.
More than 93,000 residents have also enrolled in the state health insurance scheme, according to the governor.
The administration further says it scanned nearly four million land documents into a digital database and issued 4,707 Certificates of Occupancy — more than the number issued in the state between 1999 and 2023 combined.
On sanitation, Otti says Abia evacuates 13 tonnes of waste weekly and has created more than 2,000 environmental jobs through the Abia State Environmental Agency.
The governor insists infrastructure renewal, transport reforms and investments in smart schools will remain central to his administration’s economic recovery strategy.
