LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command has restricted activities for the ongoing Egungun festival to designated venues and outing points in a bid to prevent clashes and safeguard public safety.
In a statement issued on Sunday, command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said the directive prohibits public processions and street marches by masquerade groups.
“The Lagos State Police Command hereby announces the restriction of all Egungun masquerade activities to designated outing points and venues only,” the statement read. “This ensures protection of lives, properties, and respect for the rights of other religious and cultural groups.”
The order follows reports of disturbances, property damage, and violent clashes between rival Egungun groups in recent days.
“To prevent further clashes and damage, Egungun practitioners and supporters must strictly abide by the restrictions. They are also required to apply for police security before outings,” Hundeyin added.
The command warned that violations would attract legal action. “The Command will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law on any Egungun group or follower who disturbs public order or violates the rights of others,” the statement said.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding cultural traditions while ensuring peace and security across Lagos State during the festival period.
