The Lagos State Government has urged residents, particularly those in flood-prone and low-lying areas, to remain alert as intense rainfall is expected to trigger flash floods across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, raised the alarm on Sunday, citing weather forecasts that predict thunderstorms, dense cloud cover, and widespread convective rainfall.
“All areas abutting rivers and lagoons in Lagos are also at risk of flash floods with strong currents,” Wahab warned, urging residents to prepare adequately for the adverse weather conditions.
Emphasising safety, Wahab appealed to residents to stay indoors during heavy rainfall unless absolutely necessary and to ensure children, especially those on mid-term holidays, are kept safe and away from flooded areas.
“Parents should ensure their wards do not play in the rain or attempt to swim in flash floods,” he cautioned. He further advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid attempting to navigate flooded roads, as vehicles could be submerged and strong currents could sweep people away.
Highlighting the state’s coastal challenges, Wahab explained that rising lagoon water levels during heavy rains cause tidal locks, which hinder water discharge from drainage systems and worsen flooding.
He reiterated calls for residents to stop dumping refuse into drains, noting that blocked drainage contributes significantly to flood risks.
While assuring that the government continues to clean and maintain its drainage infrastructure, Wahab stressed that collective vigilance and cooperation are vital during this period of intense rainfall.
