Korede Abdullah in Lagos
A raging fire broke out at a storey building housing the Ago Medical Centre, off Ago Palace Way, Okota, on Friday evening. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) swiftly responded to distress calls received on its emergency toll-free lines at 18:29 hrs.
According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu on Saturday, the fire was caused by a power surge when public electricity was restored.
“Upon arrival at 18:50 hrs, LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team discovered that sections of a storey building which housed a hospital were being gutted by fire at the aforementioned address,” he stated.
Emergency responders, including the LASEMA Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood and Security Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force, collaborated to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
“The fire is still raging and responders are battling to put it off,” Oke-Osanyintolu noted during the ongoing operation. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no casualties or injuries were reported, thanks to the quick intervention of the response teams.
By early Saturday, the fire had been successfully contained, bringing relief to residents and medical staff in the area. “Response and Recovery Operations are in progress,” Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring safety.
