NAFDAC Battles Drug Counterfeiting as Seized Illicit Pharmaceuticals Overwhelm Facility

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is facing a storage crisis as its enforcement warehouse in Apapa, Lagos, overflows with confiscated illicit pharmaceuticals.

Director-General, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this on Saturday during an inspection of the facility said the sheer volume of seized drugs had forced the agency to utilize even office spaces, including the director’s office, for storage.

After the visit, Adeyeye told reporters that the agency’s efforts to combat counterfeit and unregulated drugs were motivated by its dedication to protecting public health. “We are not disturbing trade; we are protecting lives. We cannot, because of trade, let people continue to die needlessly,” she stated. “What NAFDAC is doing is exactly what it is mandated to do. There is no politics in this operation!”

The agency has ramped up its enforcement activities, with a specific focus on areas like Idumota, which is recognized as a center for illegal drug trade.
