The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ramped up its efforts to fight against counterfeit and inferior products in Nigeria, destroying items worth N1.3 billion in Abuja.
The items, which consisted of medications, hospital supplies, cosmetics, and expired food products, were incinerated at the Kuje dumpsite in the Federal Capital Territory. This destruction effort also included expired food items that were voluntarily donated by organizations like the World Food Programme (WFP).
At the event, on Thursday. Festus Ukadike, representing NAFDAC’s Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the agency’s dedication to protecting public health.
“This activity highlights our steadfast commitment to eliminating counterfeit and low-quality products that threaten the health of our citizens,” Ukadike remarked.
He stressed the significance of working together with both local and international partners to combat counterfeit and expired products, noting, “We applaud the World Food Programme and other organizations for willingly donating expired items for safe disposal. This reflects their dedication to public safety.”
NAFDAC officials, along with government representatives and other stakeholders, gathered at the location to destroy large piles of seized and surrendered items, preventing them from re-entering the market.
The agency guaranteed Nigerians that it will persist in its careful oversight and enforcement of regulatory standards.
