Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced plans to recruit 2,000 additional teachers in 2025 under the Ogun Teach initiative.
This move aims to increase the number of interns from 4,000 to 6,000, ultimately bridging the gap in the state’s student-to-teacher ratio.
Abiodun made this announcement while receiving the management team of Teach For All and the Teach For Nigeria program at his Oke-Mosan office on Thursday.
The governor highlighted the success of the Ogun Teach program, which has employed over 4,000 teachers to date. Out of these, 2,000 have been given permanent employment, allowing the state to have teachers in rural areas.
Abiodun noted that his administration has increased the wages of Ogun Teach interns to N80,000, demonstrating their commitment to supporting education in the state.
According to the governor, “We introduced the Ogun Teach program, which has been extremely successful.
“Out of the 4,000 who were employed under Ogun Teach, 2,000 of them have been given permanent employment. This has allowed us to have teachers in our rural areas.
“To date, Ogun Teach has employed over 4,000 teachers. We are about to employ another batch now, which will make that 5,000. I have promised to raise that to 6,000.”
Abiodun emphasized the importance of addressing the teacher shortage in Ogun State, stating that his administration declared an emergency in the education sector due to the challenges they faced.
Despite these challenges, the state has implemented various policy initiatives, such as the Learners Identification Number and the Education Revitalisation Agenda, to improve education.
Molade Adeniyi, CEO of Teach For Nigeria, commended the Ogun State Government for creating an enabling environment for their program to thrive.
She noted that Teach For Nigeria’s mission aligns with the state’s ISEYA mantra, aiming to provide excellent and quality education to every child.
