The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a detailed investigation into reports of suspected counterfeit Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg capsules, reportedly manufactured by Ecomed Pharma Ltd and marketed by Devine Kings Pharmaceutical Ltd.
This probe comes in response to serious adverse reactions allegedly linked to the medication, with complaints emerging from affected patients nationwide.
In a statement released to Africa Health Report (AHR) on December 12, 2024, NAFDAC disclosed findings from its investigation, revealing discrepancies in production claims. While Ecomed Pharma Ltd reported producing only 20 packets of the implicated batch for registration purposes, a total of 790 packs bearing the same lot number have been recalled.
“This situation is deeply concerning, as it involves the safety of medicines distributed in Nigeria,” stated Mr. Kingsley Ekeanyanwu, the Marketing Authorization Holder for Devine Kings Pharmaceutical Ltd.
The agency is conducting laboratory analysis on the suspect product, summoning key stakeholders for questioning, and has issued a public advisory urging the discontinuation of the affected batch.
NAFDAC has stressed the importance of reporting any suspicions of substandard or counterfeit medicines by contacting its toll-free number, 0800-162-3322, or through its online platforms, including the Med-Safety app and email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
The agency confirmed that the World Health Organization’s Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS) has been notified of the issue.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding public health with its motto: “Customer-focused, Agency-minded.”
