In a significant push toward revitalizing Nigeria’s oil production, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has ramped up crude output to 1.8 million barrels per day (mbpd) as of November, with an ambitious goal to reach 2 million barrels by the end of the year.
This milestone comes after concerted efforts by NNPC’s Production War Room Team, which was established in response to directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, announced on Thursday via the company’s official X handle, commending the team’s success in increasing production despite challenging circumstances. “The team has excelled in not only restoring production but also elevating it to levels that align with our short- and long-term expectations, satisfying our shareholders,” he stated.
He emphasized that President Tinubu’s directive played a crucial role in shaping the company’s production strategy.
The Production War Room Team, which began its efforts in June 2024 with production levels at 1.43 mbpd, has incrementally increased output despite challenges within the production chain. Mr. Lawal Musa, the Chief War Room Coordinator, highlighted the importance of enhanced pipeline security and collaborative support from the Office of the National Security Adviser, as well as various government and private security agencies. “With this same momentum and with the active collaboration of all stakeholders, especially on the security front, we can see the possibility of getting to 2 mbpd by the end of the year,” he affirmed.
Additionally, the Chairman of NNPC Ltd.’s Board of Directors, Chief Pius Akinyelure, shared his optimism, expressing hope for future production levels to reach 3 mbpd. His remarks were underscored by a call for NNPC management to provide cashflow projections based on the new production figures, thereby aiding further planning efforts.
Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), commended the Production War Room Team’s dedication and reassured that the federal government remains committed to supporting NNPC’s ongoing efforts to sustain and increase oil production levels.
This production boost not only aligns with national economic goals but also reinforces NNPC’s commitment to operational excellence and security-focused infrastructure development within Nigeria’s oil sector.
