The Coordinating Minister of health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasised the significance of hypertension as a public health issue during a meeting with the Nigerian Hypertension Society in Abuja.
Pate highlighted the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts, stating, “Hypertension is preventable and treatable; and we urge Nigerians to imbibe preventative measures including lifestyle changes like increased physical activity and traditional diet low in salt, sugar, and saturated fats.”
He also commended the government’s efforts in integrating hypertension management into the national health agenda and implementing innovative programs such as the National Hypertension Control Initiative, stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and the media to effectively address the issue of hypertension.
The minister emphasised the need for routine monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar levels, stating, “It is a lifesaving habit which I would urge every susceptible individual to imbibe.” He also highlighted the urgency of raising awareness about hypertension, stating, “Hypertension is a silent killer and thrives on complacency. It is important that our men and women know their numbers.”
