The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to visa applicants against travelling to the US with the primary intention of giving birth in order to secure American citizenship for their child.
In a statement posted on its official website on Monday, the mission said consular officers would deny visa applications if there is reason to believe that the applicant’s main purpose of travel is childbirth.
“Using a visa to travel to the United States for the primary purpose of giving birth so that your child will acquire U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read.
It added: “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”
The mission reiterated its position, saying: “We will deny your visa if we believe your primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for your child.”
The practice, often referred to as ‘birth tourism’, has long drawn scrutiny from US authorities.
