Ear infection, Naira Marley and the controversy trailing Mohbad’s death

The management of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, the fast-rising Nigerian singer better known as Mohbad, confirmed his death on Tuesday night.

Mohbad, a former artiste of Marlian Records, which is owned by Naira Marley, passed away at the age of 27.

In a statement on his social media platforms, the singer’s management urged the public to respect the privacy of Mohbad’s family “during this difficult time”.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Promise Oladimeji Aloba PK/A Mohbad (Imole) today, the 12th of September, 2023,” the statement reads.

“Mohbad was light until the very end, and as we mourn the loss of the brightness he carried, the family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

“Imole is finally at Peace.”

Although the cause of the singer’s death was not revealed in the statement, a report had claimed he died of ear infection — sparking controversy on X.

Conversations about the “ear infection” report and Naira Marley began to trend on X while several wild rumours also found their way on social media regarding Mohbad’s death.

While a deluge of social media users disagreed with the “ear infection” report, others called for an autopsy to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

Rift with Naira Marley

In October 2022, the singer alleged he was assaulted by the record label’s head honcho.

Mohbad shared footage of himself, highlighting a number of bloody bruises he sustained, adding that “they threw me on the floor and trampled on me”.

“My life is at stake. I am still getting threats,” he cried out in the footage.

Mohbad also claimed members of Marley’s music label assaulted him for requesting a new manager.

In his reaction, Naira Marley alleged Mohbad was “high” when making the assault allegation.

“If Mohbad did not do a video, I would not even bother explaining because it is not something big,” Marley said.

“Obviously, he is not in his right sense. It is obvious he is not in the right state of mind.

“Why will I touch Mohbad or allow anyone to touch Mohbad? When he is back in his right sense, he will explain himself and apologize as usual.”

Mohbad would later terminate his contract with Marlian Records and also put out a song that addressed drug abuse claims against him by clarifying he had quit smoking “ganja” (marijuana).

In the song titled ‘TIFF’, the singer alleged that his parents were threatened during the rift with Marlian Records.

Mohbad attempted to commit suicide?

In January, Bella Shmurda, the Afropop singer and friend of Mohbad, revealed how he attempted to end his life during the rift with Naira Marley.

“At a point, Myself and Mohbad were in an apartment, and he said he wanted to jump from upstairs,” he had said during an interview.

“You can’t just keep going under and these people are just forming there’s nothing happening. Something is happening, and it is going to the extreme.”

Mohbad was not getting gigs

Last month, during an interview, the singer revealed that show promoters were avoiding him because he was no longer with Marlian Records.

“Show promoters did not want to pick me for shows because I left a label. If they want to reach out to me, they still go back to the label. And the label keeps saying ‘That boy is not really okay here’,” he said.

“‘He is going through a lot’ and they (the show promoters) end up believing it…

“They had to call me to ask me if I was okay. ‘Can you do the show?’ And I am like ‘why do you guys feel I am not okay’.

“They told me that ‘the label you left said you are in the hospital’”.

Mohbad’s last performance

Mohbad was last seen on stage on Sunday, September 10, at a town hall in Ikorodu where he thrilled concertgoers with his hit songs.
