The Anambra State government has approved the construction of a rehabilitation centre in Nibo, Awka, as part of a sweeping plan to address mental health challenges in the state.
Announcing the decision after the 12th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) on Thursday, Governor Charles Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to holistic healthcare for all citizens.
“Mental health is health too, and we must treat it with the same urgency and dignity as physical health,” Soludo declared.
Explaining the significance of the project, the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, said the centre would provide a safe and structured environment for individuals discharged from asylums, supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
“This facility complements Soludo’s inclusive healthcare agenda, which is anchored on the principle that good health goes beyond the absence of illness; it includes mental wellness,” Mefor added.
Governor Soludo, recently honoured as the most performing governor in primary healthcare both in the Southeast and nationwide, continues to deepen reforms in the sector.
In addition to the Nibo centre, he has approved the supply of routine antenatal drugs under the state’s free antenatal and delivery services scheme and awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the collapsed perimeter fence and drainage at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Nawfia, further strengthening Anambra’s healthcare infrastructure.
