Nigeria Turns to Satellites for Security, Disaster Response, Others

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria is intensifying the use of satellite technology to tackle security threats, strengthen disaster response, and expand internet access in rural areas, according to the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT).

Speaking at a media training in Abuja, Managing Director Mrs Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, represented by Engr. Abiodun Attah, said satellites are now central to everyday life in the country.

“Satellites and ICT are no longer futuristic — the power broadband, weather forecasts, emergency response and national security operations,” she said.

She emphasised the role of the media in explaining complex technologies and inspiring young Nigerians to pursue careers in digital innovation and space.

The workshop engaged ICT journalists on satellite applications, broadband expansion, and the media’s influence on public perception and policy.
