ABUJA, Nigeria – Public outrage has erupted across Nigeria after filmmaker TG Omori revealed that dialysis sessions cost more than ₦100,000 each—an amount that dwarfs the national minimum wage.
Omori, who is currently receiving treatment, disclosed the figure on his social media account on Monday, writing: “Dialysis in Nigeria costs over ₦100,000 per session. How are ordinary people supposed to survive this?”
African health Report,AHR reported earlier that President Bola Tinubu has approved a reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis sessions in federal hospitals, cutting fees from N50,000 t0 N12000 per session https://clik.now/NFaZ
His revelation directly contradicts claims by presidential aide Dada Olusegun, who recently insisted that the Federal Government’s subsidy programme had reduced the price to ₦12,000 in federal hospitals.
Medical professionals argue that the reality is far different. Consultant nephrologist Dr Sina Adegoke told reporters: “In spite of the subsidy claims, patients are still being billed outrageous amounts in many centres. The gulf between policy and actual practice is still alarmingly wide.”
The controversy has reignited debate over the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, where patients with chronic conditions face mounting costs and limited access to life-saving treatments.
Advocacy groups warn that the subsidy scheme, introduced in March 2024, has not translated into uniform pricing nationwide.
“This is not just a debate about costs—it is about survival,” Dr Adegoke stressed.
