The World Health Organisation, (WHO) Country Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo has stressed the importance of unity in the fight against cancer, speaking at the World Cancer Day commemoration with the theme: “United by Unique.”
In a message made available to newsmen on Tuesday, Mulombo commended Nigeria’s leadership, particularly the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Cancer Control Programme, for their ongoing efforts to combat cancer.
He acknowledged the significant contributions of cancer survivors and stakeholders in raising awareness, prevention, and treatment initiatives in the country.
“Everyone’s cancer journey is unique, but together we fight,” said Mulombo, emphasizing a people-centered approach to care. He added, “We must not only focus on treating the disease but also include the needs and experiences of individuals, families, and communities in shaping health systems.”
Highlighting the importance of global initiatives, Mulombo reiterated WHO’s support for programs like the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative, and the Global Breast Cancer Initiative. “Nigeria has already adopted these initiatives, prioritizing cancer care as part of its Health Sector Renewal Initiative,” he noted.
Mulombo expressed WHO’s ongoing commitment to support Nigeria’s cancer efforts, including public awareness and treatment programs through the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp). “We all have a role to play in supporting the government’s fight against cancer,” he urged, calling for continued collaboration and dedication to fighting cancer in Nigeria and beyond.
