AKWA IBOM, Nigeria – Akwa Ibom State has set a 69 per cent target in its 2025 Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination campaign to protect young girls against cervical cancer.
The campaign will prioritise five low-performing LGAs—Oruk Anam, Itu, Ikot Ekpene, Oron, and Nsit Ubium—as a follow-up to the 2023 statewide vaccination drive.
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Uyo, Dr David Umoh stressed the importance of protecting adolescent girls. “We need to protect our young girls and their future and prevent them from having cervical cancer,” he said.
He explained that the HPV vaccines are safe, free, and administered in a single dose for eligible girls.
State Health Promotion Officer, Mrs Margaret Etim, urged religious leaders, civil society groups, and the media to dispel myths surrounding the vaccine. She highlighted outreach to vulnerable populations and out-of-school girls as priorities, alongside collaboration with organisations such as the Red Cross.
Bunmi Gab-Umoden of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) emphasised proper documentation and data tracking. “A lot is still needed to reach over 47,000 girls during this campaign,” she said.
Spot checks will be conducted in Onna, Etinan, and Ikot Ekpene to monitor progress across varying performance levels.
