LAGOS, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Chapter, has demanded an upward review of the minimum wage for workers in the state to ₦150,000, citing soaring living costs.
In a statement signed Friday by Lagos Chairperson, Mrs Funmi Sesi, the union described the current ₦85,000 wage as “grossly inadequate” given the city’s economic realities.
“The time has come for an upward review. No one can blame Governor Sanwo-Olu if he approves a higher wage, because Lagos workers deserve better pay and decent working conditions,” Sesi said.
She explained that Lagos residents face higher expenses in accommodation, transportation, food, and utilities than most states, making the adjustment urgent.
The Congress noted that Imo and Ebonyi have already raised wages, setting precedents for others. Imo increased its minimum wage from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000, while Ebonyi adjusted from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, according to officials.
Sesi expressed optimism Lagos would lead by example in prioritising workers’ welfare, urging quick government action.
“We remain committed to fighting for fair wages that match the economic realities workers face,” she said.
