In a profound act of compassion and responsive leadership, the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has extended a life-transforming intervention to a young woman living with a rare muscle disorder.

Ummi, a 31-year-old indigene of Kano State, has been battling proximal myopathy—a progressive and debilitating muscle-wasting condition—for over 18 years.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Despite the condition gradually eroding her physical strength and mobility, Ummi defied the odds to earn a law degree. However, her deteriorating health prevented her from continuing to Law School.

In a courageous plea for help, Ummi reached out directly to Governor Yusuf via text message. Moved by her story, the Governor responded without delay, ordering a discreet medical verification of her condition. Upon confirmation, he pledged to fully sponsor her medical needs, including mobility aids, therapy equipment, and comprehensive healthcare support—an intervention worth millions of naira.

Further showcasing his compassionate leadership, Governor Yusuf invited Ummi to the Government House, where he expressed admiration for her strength and perseverance, warmly referring to her as “a daughter.” During the meeting, he introduced Ummi to his own daughter, who is also a law student, to offer friendship and mentorship.

In addition to the extensive medical support, Governor Yusuf announced that Ummi’s caregiver, Amina, would be placed on the Government House payroll to ensure continued care.

He also pledged ongoing food support to the family and promised them a joyful and memorable Sallah celebration.

“This is life,” Governor Yusuf remarked during the meeting. “Every soul has its test, its path, its destiny. But what matters is hope—and the people who help you carry on.”

The Governor’s act of empathy and decisive support has drawn widespread commendation across Kano State and beyond, with many Nigerians hailing him as a true symbol of people-centered governance.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains steadfast in his commitment to building a government that listens, responds, and uplifts—one that treats every citizen, especially the most vulnerable, with care, dignity, and opportunity.
