Matawalle Warns Against Attacks on Government Facilities, Backs Emergency Rule in Rivers

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammad Matawalle MON, has issued a stern warning against any attempts to attack government facilities in Rivers State, stating that security forces will respond decisively to any such threats.

His remarks come in the wake of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, a move aimed at restoring order amid escalating political tensions.

“The Nigerian Military remains on high alert to protect government infrastructure and ensure the security of citizens,” Matawalle stated in a press release issued on Tuesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Iyogun Sunday, “Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a firm and decisive response.”

He underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to maintaining stability, expressing concern over reports of vandalism and threats from militant groups.

The minister also pointed to the recent demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly by the governor, which has left the state without a functioning legislature for over fourteen months. “This unconstitutional action has deepened the political impasse and hindered the government’s ability to serve the people effectively,” he said.

Citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that reaffirmed the necessity of a functional legislature, Matawalle called for an immediate return to democratic governance in Rivers State.

“This declaration is a necessary measure to restore order and uphold the rule of law,” he emphasized, urging all political actors to respect the emergency declaration and work toward a peaceful resolution.

He concluded by reaffirming the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces’ dedication to national security, expressing hope that the intervention would pave the way for peace and stability in Rivers State.
