Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Man for Alleged Murder of Girlfriend

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested 32-year-old Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, 39-year-old Emem Monday Effanga.

According to Police spokesperson Timfon John, “Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested one Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson… for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga… and stealing her mobile phone after committing the crime”.

Effanga was found dead in her apartment with visible marks of violence on her face and neck, suggesting strangulation.

Investigations revealed that Nelson visited Effanga’s residence on February 6, 2025, his birthday, and demanded to use her phone to take pictures for his birthday celebration on social media.

When she refused, a struggle ensued, and Nelson allegedly strangled her with his hands, struck her head on the floor with fist blows, and fled with her phone. The police recovered an Itel Super Phone belonging to the deceased from Nelson during his arrest.

A postmortem examination has been conducted, and the cause of Effanga’s death has been documented by a pathologist. The case has been charged to court, and the police assure that justice will be served.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has also warned against domestic violence and criminal acts, urging the public to remain security-conscious and report suspicious activities to the police.
