The Lagos State government has issued a warning about above-normal rainfall this year, cautioning that some areas may experience flash floods.
During a press briefing in Alausa, the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the state has implemented its own network of weather and river gauge stations to monitor weather conditions and water levels.
Wahab urged residents living in flood-prone areas, including Owode, Iwaya, Makoko, Badia, Ijora, Isaalu, Pota, and Shibiri, to “always be on the alert and ready to relocate to higher grounds when the need arises.”
He reassured the public that the government remains committed to working with the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) to regulate the release of water from the Oyan Dam, preventing excessive flooding in downstream communities.
Additionally, the commissioner highlighted that low-lying areas such as Agiliti, Agboyi, Itowolo, and Ajegunle are under close observation due to the potential for the Ogun River to overflow.
He reaffirmed the state’s dedication to proactive flood management strategies, ensuring residents’ safety amid the expected heavy rainfall.
