Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State hasun emphasized that the Northwest region possesses the necessary human and material resources to overcome its economic challenges and achieve sustainable development.
The governor made this assertion on Friday while receiving the Board and Management of the Northwest Development Commission at the Government House in Dutse.
Addressing the delegation, Governor Namadi lauded the leadership of the newly established commission and pledged the support of Jigawa State and the Northwest Governors’ Forum to ensure its success. He stressed the need for collaboration between the commission and state governments to drive meaningful development in the region.
“The Northwest region has the highest poverty rate in Nigeria, but this should not be the case. We have the resources—both human and material—to change this narrative. I urge you to have a clear vision, remain committed, and focus on setting key priorities. Our people deserve better, and with strategic planning and implementation, we can transform the region into an economic powerhouse,” he stated.
Governor Namadi urged the commission to adopt a strategic approach by studying the comparative advantages of each state and aligning them with state development agendas. He emphasized the importance of focusing on long-term solutions such as sustainable infrastructure, education, security, and economic growth rather than short-term relief initiatives.
The governor also called on the commission to uphold transparency, accountability, and integrity in its operations, assuring them of his administration’s full support.
“The people must see that you are genuinely working in their best interest. Once they have confidence in your commitment to development, they will support you. The Northwest cannot afford to lag behind—we must take bold steps to secure a prosperous future,” he added.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board of the Northwest Development Commission, Lawal Sama’ila Abdullahi, acknowledged the crucial role played by the governors in the commission’s establishment. He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to working closely with state governments to tackle key challenges in the region.
He highlighted Jigawa State’s strong agricultural potential, noting that it positions the state as a key partner in the commission’s efforts to boost agro-allied industries and infrastructure development.
Abdullahi further stated that the commission would serve as an intervention agency addressing major issues such as security concerns, out-of-school children, drug addiction, and economic empowerment. He called for Governor Namadi’s guidance in mobilizing support from other governors to ensure the commission’s effectiveness.
The visit marks a significant step in the Northwest region’s quest for economic transformation, with expectations that the commission will play a pivotal role in addressing developmental challenges and harnessing the region’s potential for prosperity.
