The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has debunked reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), clarifying that ongoing activities at the facility are part of a scheduled maintenance operation.
In a statement released on Thursday by Olufemi Soneye, NNPC Ltd.’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, the company described claims of an explosion as “completely false.”
The clarification was also posted on NNPC’s official Facebook page.
According to the statement, operations at WRPC Area 1 were deliberately curtailed on January 25, 2025, to facilitate essential maintenance and intervention work on select equipment.
These efforts, which include servicing field instruments, are aimed at ensuring the refinery produces high-quality finished and intermediate products, particularly Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene (Kero).
Despite the temporary operational adjustments, the company assured that AGO loading has continued at an average of eight trucks per day over the past 11 days.
The refinery maintains a sufficient supply to support ongoing truck load-out operations.
NNPC Ltd. reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a steady supply of petroleum products and expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders as the maintenance work nears completion.
The company confirmed that WRPC Area 1 is expected to resume full operations within the next few days.
