U.S Withdrawal Intent: WHO Seeks Dialogue on Continued Partnership

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed deep concern over the United States’ recent announcement of its intention to withdraw from the global health body.

The move has sparked concerns over the future of international health collaboration.

“WHO plays a critical role in safeguarding global health, including that of Americans,” the organisation said in a statement on Tuesday. “Together, we have tackled health crises, eradicated smallpox, and brought polio to the brink of extinction.”

As a founding member in 1948, the United States has been integral to shaping WHO’s direction. Over the past seven decades, the U.S. and WHO have jointly responded to numerous health threats, working to strengthen systems and improve health outcomes worldwide.

The U.S. has been a crucial player in supporting WHO’s efforts, contributing both financially and diplomatically and the third-largest donor to WHO, after Germany and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its withdrawal would represent a significant blow to global health initiatives, given the pivotal role the U.S. plays in funding, policy-making, and global health leadership.

“With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries.”

“This work continues. We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.”
