Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his dedication to the welfare of retirees by approving the hosting of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Kano.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Friday.

According to the statement, the announcement came during the flag-off of the third phase of gratuity payments, where the governor disbursed an impressive N5 billion to 2,000 retirees in a ceremony at Kano Government House on Thursday.

Governor Yusuf, while speaking at the event, reiterated his administration’s commitment to clearing the backlog of gratuities inherited from previous administrations.

He assured retirees that the state government would not relent until all pensioners receive their entitlements.

The governor expressed his appreciation for being honored with the title of “Best-Friendly-Pensioners Governor of 2024,” describing it as a reflection of his administration’s steadfast commitment to Kano’s senior citizens.

“This administration is dedicated to ensuring that retirees receive their long-overdue rewards for their years of service,” the governor stated.

“Even if the union is ready tomorrow to commence their AGM, Kano State will be fully prepared to host it and cover all logistical needs.”

NUP President Applauds Kano’s Leadership

National President of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Comrade Godwin Agurisi, represented by Assent Thomas Sunday, praised Governor Yusuf’s outstanding efforts in addressing the grievances of retirees.

He emphasized that Kano State has become a model for prompt and consistent gratuity payments, an achievement unparalleled across the country.

“What we are witnessing in Kano today is unprecedented. Governor Yusuf has restored hope and dignity to retirees, moving them from despair under the previous administration,” Mr. Sunday said.

He further urged other state governors to emulate Governor Yusuf’s humility and dedication to pensioners, while pledging the union’s unwavering support for his administration.

Stakeholders Laud the Initiative

Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, President of the Medical and Health Workers Union, reflected on the struggles retirees faced under previous administrations and applauded Governor Yusuf for fulfilling his promises.

The Emir of Karaye, His Royal Highness Muhammad Muhammad Mahraz, commended the governor’s transformative gratuity payments, noting that nearly every family in Kano has benefited from the initiative.

“This act of compassion has touched countless lives and deserves to be celebrated,” the Emir remarked.

With this initiative, Governor Yusuf continues to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to the welfare of retirees and sets a powerful example for other leaders to follow.
