In a bid to reduce traffic congestion during the festive season, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has collaborated with the Anambra and Delta State Commands of the Nigeria Police Force.
The partnership, aimed at easing traffic flow across the Niger bridges connecting Onitsha, Anambra State, and Asaba, Delta State, will focus on ensuring smooth vehicular movement during the busy yuletide period.
The collaboration follows strategic discussions between the Anambra Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, and Police Commissioners Nnaghe Itam (Anambra) and BS Oluwafemi (Delta).
“This partnership was reached to address the expected traffic surge and ensure the free flow of vehicles on these key bridges,” said Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide in a statement released Tuesday.
Key measures outlined in the initiative include the removal of all checkpoints at the Head Bridge from December 18, 2024, to January 10, 2025, mobile surveillance at the Second Bridge axis, and the dismantling of police checkpoints on the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge.
Others are the joint traffic control teams will be deployed to manage congestion effectively.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the initiative, stating its potential to ensure safety and reduce delays. “This collaboration will strengthen our efforts in achieving smoother movement and safer conditions for all road users,” he said.
