The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced that 19.2 million Nigerians now enrolled in health insurance schemes, surpassing its 2024 target.
The achievement, disclosed by NHIA Director-General, Kelechi Ohiri at a Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day roundtable in Abuja, brings the country closer to its ambitious goal of covering 95% of the population by 2027.
“We are proud to announce that 19.2 million Nigerians have been covered by health insurance,” Ohiri said, noting that this success brings Nigeria to 95% of its target for the 2027 presidential coverage goal.
He attributed the accomplishment to effective policy reforms, strong stakeholder collaborations, and a steadfast commitment to universal health coverage.
Despite ongoing challenges such as funding limitations and infrastructure deficits, Ohiri remained optimistic.
The NHIA plans to scale up digital enrollment and include informal sector workers in the insurance scheme as part of its 2025–2027 strategic roadmap. “With the theme of this year’s UHC Day, health should reflect the type of government the country has and must make decisions that represent its aspirations.
“We should prioritise Primary Health Care (PHC) as the bedrock of our health system,” he said.
