The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced that its members will resume work on Monday, December 16, 2024, following the conclusion of a two-week warning strike.
The strike, which ran from December 2 to December 15, 2024, was a result of unresolved issues in the polytechnic sector, particularly the government’s failure to address nine key items in a work plan created with ASUP.
ASUP President, Shammah Kpanja in a statement on Saturday, stressed that the decision to call off the strike was based on a recent conciliation meeting with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, held on December 9, 2024. “We are grateful for the ministry’s intervention, which helped prevent an indefinite strike. A new memorandum of understanding was signed, and both parties agreed to reconvene on January 23, 2025, to review compliance and address further concerns,” Kpanja said.
Kpanja noted that while the immediate strike was suspended, ASUP remains committed to ensuring the resolution of long-standing issues. “We urge the government to take concrete actions to implement the agreements made, as our members’ patience has its limits,” he added.
The union also commended its members for their resilience during the strike. “We thank our members for their steadfast commitment to this cause,” Kpanja stated. “However, our expectation is that the government will show greater dedication in resolving the disputes that have lingered for far too long.
ASUP’s National Executive Council will hold another meeting after the January 2025 session to evaluate progress.
