The Lagos State Government has issued a fresh warning about the renewed threat of flash flooding in the state following Thursday’s heavy rainfall, described as the heaviest in many months.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the release of water from Oyan Dam has caused channels to overflow into rivers.
According to Wahab, the intense rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday led to rising river levels, making it difficult for major drainage channels to discharge.
The latest flash flood advisory was deemed necessary due to unusually high average and maximum values recorded at weather monitoring stations across the state.
Data from four gauge stations in the state showed a drastic increase in water levels, with areas like Kara and Isheri-North GRA already experiencing river flooding.
Specifically, Kara recorded a water level of 2.2 meters, nearing the threshold, while Isheri-North GRA reached 20.015 meters, exceeding the flood threshold.
Residents living in low-lying areas and along the Ogun River banks are advised to prioritize their safety by relocating to higher ground to prevent loss of lives and properties
With more rainfall expected this month, the government urges citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
