Fuel Price Hike: Edo Government Postpones School Resumption Indefinitely

The Edo State Government has indefinitely postponed the resumption of all schools due to the recent increase in fuel prices.

The decision, announced via a memo from Ojo Akin-Longe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, was made on Saturday.

“The Edo State Government announces the postponement of the resumption of both public and private schools, originally set for September 9, 2024, until further notice,” the memo stated.

The government cited rising tensions and the financial strain on parents as reasons for the delay. “Due to the recent fuel price hike and the ensuing challenges, schools will remain closed until the situation stabilizes,” Akin-Longe explained.

The memo advised parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely monitor their children’s activities during this period.

The fuel price increase has caused considerable unrest, leading the government to delay the new school term to ease the burden on families.

Africa Health Report, reported earlier that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to initiate nationwide protests starting September 15, 2024.

“The current climate necessitates this action to ensure the well-being of students and to allow families to adapt to the financial strain,” Akin-Longe added.
