36 State Attorneys-General in Abuja, Monday, to Plan Effective Corruption Prevention

In a significant move to combat the monster of corruption in Nigeria, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is hosting a one-day roundtable discussion in Abuja on Monday, September 9th, 2024.

The event, tagged the AGs Summit,  will bring together State Attorneys-General and Commissioners for Justice from all 36 states, along with key stakeholders in the justice sector.

This information was contained in a press statement released on Saturday and signed by Ademola Bakare, the acting spokesperson of the commission.

The summit, themed “Building a Unified Front Against Corruption in Nigeria,” aims to enhance anti-corruption efforts across all levels of government and strengthen collaboration between the ICPC and State Attorneys-General nationwide. ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu SAN, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative in advancing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS).

The event features a lineup of prominent speakers, including the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, as the special guest of honour. Former AGF, Kanu Agabi, SAN, will deliver the keynote address, while a dynamic panel discussion will be led by former Lagos State Attorney-General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN.

According to the statement, the summit seeks to identify and address systemic challenges within the justice system that contribute to corruption, hindering ICPC’s efforts.

It also aims to develop effective strategies to enhance ICPC’s capacity for corruption prevention, foster a stronger understanding between ICPC and Attorneys-General, and identify areas for collaboration between ICPC and state governments.

There will also be what the commission referred to as a “dynamic panel” of discussants which will be led by former Lagos State Attorney-General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN.

Other notable contributors include Mr. Ekpo Nta, former Chairman of ICPC; Prof. Mohammed Tabiu, SAN, of Bayero University, Kano; Prof. Abdulkarim Kana, SAN (Designate), of Nasarawa State University, Keffi; and Barr. Hauwa Abubakar, Attorney-General of Borno State.
