In a coordinated all-of-government effort, the Federal Government enabled the reception of 155 Nigerian migrants returned from Libya by the International Organization for Migration, IOM.
This reception operation was executed at the Cargo terminal of the Murtala Mohamed International Airport, situated in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
Mr. Alexander Oturu, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator representing the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission For Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Mr. Aliyu Tijani Ahmed, commended the seamless cooperation between various governmental and non-governmental entities involved in this operation.
He also affirmed that the returning migrants would be integrated into the Commission’s programs and other reintegration initiatives.
Subsequently, the migrants were transported to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency camp, where the NCFRMI and IOM have established a tripartite agreement to offer temporary shelter to the returnees until they receive transportation allowances to continue their journey to their final destinations.
Notably, among the returned migrants were 14 males, 110 females, 23 children, and 8 infants. The profiling of the migrants was conducted by officers from the NCFRMI and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), with additional support from entities such as Port Health, FAAN, the Federal Ministry of Labour (Migrants Resource Centre), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Child Protection Network, and Web of Hearts Foundation, all of whom were present to provide assistance.
