The wife of Cross River State Governor, Rev. (Mrs.) Eyoanwan Otu, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to the fight against malaria and child mortality and morbidity.

Mrs Otu made the commitment in Calabar while flagging off the 2023 free Insecticide-treated Nets, ITN, mass campaign and first round of the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week, MNCHW, across the state.

The state First Lady noted that the ownership, retention, and proper use of Insecticide-Treated Nets remain the most cost-effective and easily deployed method for malaria prevention.

According to her, the use of treated nets result in significant reduction in malaria-related deaths and disabilities over the years.

Otu further stated that the distribution of the nets in Cross River State will ensure coverage of the populace across the state.

On his part, the State Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Peter Agbe Odey, said the safeguard of lives and properties of every individual in the state is the cardinal objective of this administration.

Mrs.Otu added that the delivery of lifesaving interventions, such as the ITNs distribution and vaccination of children, is a leeway to achieving a healthy and prosperous Cross River State.

Meanwhile, Mrs Otu was decorated as the 2023 Malaria Ambassador in the state.

Speaking after her decoration, she pledged her unwavering support to malaria interventions, urging Cross Riverians to do their bit in the fight against the spread of malaria through the effective and constant use of the nets.

A total of 2,797,350 nets in 1,025 distribution points spread across the 196 wards in the state are ready for distribution, while the MNCH week targets 844,348 children with vitamin A supplement and other immunization vaccines.

Also present at the flag-off were the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Anthony Owan Enoh; WHO state coordinator, Yewande Yetunde; Chief Officer, UNICEF Enugu Field Office, Juliet Chiluwe; as well as USAID/PMI and AIDE representative, Anne Oge, and other functionaries from the state government.
