WHO Launches Advisory Group to Increase Glasses Access by 40%

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) for the SPECS 2030 initiative, with a goal to increase access to glasses by 40% globally.

A statement made public by the organisation on Monday stated that this initiative is a response to the pressing need for refractive error care, as uncorrected refractive error remains a major cause of vision impairment worldwide.

During the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly in 2021, WHO Member States endorsed the first global target for refractive error, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue.

WHO Director for Noncommunicable Diseases, Rehabilitation, and Disability, Dr. Bente Mikkelson stressed the importance stating, “The SPECS 2030 initiative marks a significant milestone in combatting uncorrected refractive error, which affects millions.”

Approximately 800 million people worldwide currently lack access to glasses, despite it being a cost-effective solution. The SPECS 2030 initiative aims to mobilize stakeholders to support Member States in achieving the 40% increase in access to appropriate eyewear by 2030.

The STAG, comprising 16 members appointed by WHO following a call for expressions of interest, will bring together diverse expertise essential for addressing uncorrected refractive error. Over the next two years, these members will work collaboratively to shape strategies, policies, and research to enhance access to eye care globally.
