ABUJA, Nigeria – Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu has made history as the first female Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), following her appointment by President Bola Tinubu.
The confirmation was disclosed in a letter dated August 8, 2025, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate. “It is my expectation that you will continue to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the hospital continues to deliver quality healthcare services to all,” the letter reads.
Her appointment marks a turning point in gender representation within Nigeria’s tertiary health institutions.
A Craniofacial Orthodontist and Commonwealth Fellow, she brings decades of clinical, academic, and administrative excellence to the role.
She began her journey at UBTH in 1997 as a Junior Registrar and rose to become a Consultant and Head of Department.
Her over 55 scholarly publications and international training at Oxford and the University of Washington underscore her credentials.
Her tenure is expected to usher in innovation, strengthen global partnerships, and improve healthcare delivery in one of Nigeria’s busiest teaching hospitals.
